The Inside Out Tree is an interactive art installation designed to transform how our community talks about youth mental wellness.
Mental health challenges are often invisible—especially for young people who feel pressure to present a version of themselves that hides their inner struggles.
My own journey involved overcoming the fear of vulnerability and self-expression, and, as an artist, I understand deeply how creativity can serve as a pathway to inner peace and authentic connection.
This project creates a safe, creative space where youth voices can be heard, shared, and celebrated. Using the powerful metaphor of tree anatomy—roots (struggles), trunk (growth), branches (resilience)—The Inside Out Tree invites both youth and community members to participate in building a living artwork that grows with each contribution. Through creative expression, honest dialogue, and collective participation, we’re turning vulnerability into strength and individual experiences into community understanding.
Selected by the Rapid City Arts Council and supported by the Black Hills Area Community Foundation, this installation will be on display at the Dahl Arts Center in October 2025. I hope you’ll join me in creating something that matters.

Research shows that art journaling promotes mental wellness through several neurobiological mechanisms, including activating the brain’s reward centers, regulating emotions, and reducing stress.
The combination of artistic expression and journaling provides a unique pathway for healing and personal growth.
